How did you get started?
A career in care was not something I had ever considered, although to be honest I hadn’t really considered any career. I graduated university at 22 and like many others, found myself without a clear direction. I was applying for anything and everything I saw advertised but nothing was successful. Abuilding down the road from my house had a sign saying staff wanted and so, without finding out what the job was, I put in an application. It was only when I went for an interview that I discovered it was a care home for adults with mental illness.
I was quite nervous at first, recalling all the worst stereotypes of the mentally ill I had seen on TV and films and imaging what could be in store for me. However, what I found what nothing like what I was expecting, and I actually really enjoyed it. That part-time job led to full-time job, which led to other jobs in care, which, 20+ years later has led me to where I am today.
Where are you now?
I am now the registered manager of Castlerea House, a residential home for adults with mental illness in Salford. Castlerea House has operated since 1990 and in 2011, Juniper Manton Limited (my parents’ company) took over the operation.
Who do you help?
Our residents are adults who, due to their mental health issues are unable to live independently and are felt would benefit for 24-hour care. We provide them with a safe, welcoming home where they feel care for, respected and included.
Where is your career going?
Castlerea House is just the beginning. It is sad to say but the demand for places like Castlerea is not going away and so my current project is setting up a second home, watch this space!
Why do you do it?
The most rewarding part of my job is the sense of family present at Castlerea House. Supporting our residents to live fulfilled lives is so satisfying making it a pleasure to come to work each day. Knowing we have provided people with a safe and caring home who would not otherwise have one makes all the hard work worthwhile.
What advice can you give?
Wherever you start your career, do not feel limited. There are so many ways to progress your career, whether it is through study or promotion within your organisation. Enjoy your job, take pride in help others and build a career that suits you.
