I think I might be unusual in that when I was 12 I read about a hospital social worker, and decided that was the job for me. At the time I was ready to leave school, Social Work qualifications were being established and the route into the job was through University. I went to Bath University and studied sociology and social work. My first job as a qualified social worker was indeed as a social worker in the Bristol Hospitals. That was where I first supervised students and found my life- long interest in supporting beginning social workers.

Where are you now?

I have been a qualified social worker for 50 years, and in that time I have worked across all sections of social care. Including senior management roles, and 8 years as a consultant. My current role, is as Registered Owner of Castlerea. Where I support James the Registered Manager. I hope to bring my skills and experiences to enhance the care of our residents. Part of this includes being a Practice Educator for social work students. Our students are very privileged in learning from the welcome our residents give them, and hearing about their life experiences.

Who do you help?

I hope that I help our family of residents at Castlerea. I like to spend time with them and ensure they have access to outings and activities of their choice, as well as introducing them to new experiences – ensuring their wishes are listened to, enhancing the quality of their lives.

Where are you going?

This is a hard one for me to answer. I guess my career is heading to retirement. In the meantime, continuing to contribute to life at Castlerea.

Why do you do it?

If you give it a chance care is the most rewarding work that can be done. Meeting people and hearing about their lives and experiences is so interesting. Being able to make a difference to a person’s life can make us feel good about ourselves. Whether that be offering dignified person care to ensure someone feels clean and tidy, or supporting someone to know they can do something for themselves, or enabling someone to enjoy a leisure activity all bring rich rewards.
For me the thing I love best is the personal contact with people.

What advice can you give?

I think the best advice I can give, is “try it”. With an open mind, and good manners you will soon find if you have the aptitude to care for others. Enjoy it, and have fun with those you care for. Listen to people, they will guide you in how they want to be supported, so don’t make assumptions. We are all different!

How did you get started? My entry to care is very different to James.
